The
ESI Scheme was implemented in the
cities of Kolkata and Howrah of West
Bengal Region on 14th August 1955.
Later the scheme has been extended
to other centres in the state in a
phased manner and the scheme is now
working in 11 centres spread over
in 9 districts of the state. The list
of centres the ESI Scheme in West
Bengal is in force with the date of
implementation.
Recently, extension of the scheme
under the phased programme at Kulti
in Burdwan District, Kharagpur in
Midnapur West District and part of
Mahestala (areas comprising the Unit
of Bata and ancillary industries )
in 24-Parganas(South) District, has
got administrative approval of the
State Govt. Besides, the State Govt.
has accorded administrative approval
for extension of the Scheme to new
Sectors, viz., private Medical Institution
and Private Educational Institutions.
All are these above under implementation.
Presently the scheme covers 15000
industries and establishments with
6 lakhs employees of such factories/establishments
and about 28 lakhs beneficiaries including
family members getting ESI benefits
in the state.
